More Pixels Means Bigger Digital Files

 If you're not sure how you're going to use your digital photos, set your digital camera to the setting that's good enough for print pictures. Then, whether you want to use a picture on a Website, on your computer screen, or for a high res print, you can adjust or cut extra pixels. Because you can't really add pixels after the picture has been taken, keep your camera setting high enough to cover all development applications.
So, how does each pixel in a digital photo add to the size of the image file? An example might be an image that measures 3500 pixels wide and 2225 pixels tall, for a total pixel count of 7,787,500. This file consumes more than double the space on your hard drive that a picture measuring 2500 pixels wide and 1200 pixels tall. Rememer that some of that picture's file space is also dedicated to colour data.
If you are using digital photos for the web only, a 75ppi or 150ppi version of the same image, which would be all you require, would measure a tiny fraction of storage space.
In addition to using more storage space, large image files use much more of your computer's memory (RAM) when you edit them, and certainly any server memory when displayed only(visitors viewing a web page with a larger image). Typically, the RAM requirement is roughly three times the file size. EG: If you are always editing pics measuring in the gigs of file size, you might be best using a PC with 4Gig or RAM or so to reduce any lag time. And remember that a large image file on a Web page can be a huge problem if you have lots of visitors or numourous websites on a server.
